It’s that time of the year again! Winter is (slowly) coming to an end and now it’s time to start thinking about getting your home ready for the better parts of the year. Although the groundhogs predicted another 6 weeks of winter – this gives us a chance to get ahead of our spring cleaning!

While you can easily find spring cleaning checklists or 30-day spring cleaning challenges any where on the internet – most of these only tackle cleaning surfaces and dusting hard to reach areas. In this post, we’re going to cover that of course, but we’ll take it a step further providing decluttering and organization tips to help you create a home that you’re proud to show off all year-round!

Tips for Decluttering and Keeping Your Home Clean All Year-Round

After putting in all this work, you’d hate to have it undone in a matter of days, right? Not to worry, here are some tips to help you keep your home looking like the ending of an HGTV show all year-round.

1. Set a Daily or Weekly Cleaning Schedule

By setting a cleaning schedule you can simplify your home cleaning process and end up saving a lot of time and effort by splitting it into bite-sized tasks. For multi-person households you can also delegate the tasks, so it all doesn’t fall on you!

2. Keep Extra Storage Containers or Bins

This may seem counter-intuitive to the decluttering / cleaning process by bringing extra items into the home, but having these on hand will allow you to start packing things away that you don’t need anymore, but don’t want to get rid of. Storage bins are also quite affordable as well! Your local hardware store will likely have some heavy-duty ones (in a variety of sizes) ranging from $10-20 a piece.

We also recommend these over cardboard boxes as they are much more durable, easier to lift, and waterproof.

3. Drawer and Closet Organization

If you haven’t already, we highly recommend investing in some organizers or closet shelving units as these will help ensure that every item in your home has its own place. Much like a utensil organizer in your kitchen, you’ll be able to use these in desks, bathroom vanities, cupboards, etc. to effectively organize all your items.

Closet organizers are great as well, as they’ll allow you to store items that were once taking up all your table or shelf space, along with any overflow clothing from your dressers (or floor).

4. Consider Storage Options

One of the best options you have for keeping your home clean is to store away any excess items or boxes that we’re previously just taking up space. No matter how clean everything is, a cluttered home will always look messy and while we understand that it’s difficult to get rid of some items as you never know when you’ll need them again – you should know that you have other options available to you.

Many people rely on self storage lockers to organize their homes and preserve any extra, unneeded, or sentimental items. You can also investigate indoor / heated storage lockers so that you won’t have to worry about items becoming damaged due to the extreme temperatures in Canada.

Even if you aren’t sure if you still want something or if you just want to put it away until next season (much like winter gear, or holiday decorations that are only used for ¼ of the year at best) you should consider investing in a storage unit to keep them from taking up all the storage space in your home.

Make Space Storage has many options to store your valuables such as portable containers, on-site self storage, and more! To learn more about our services, or to get a quote, please reach out to one of our helpful representatives today. We’re happy to help!
