Creating your Ideal Office Space When Working from Home in 2023

Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a huge increase in the number of positions and companies operating from home. While many adopted this simply to stay productive during the lockdown or for social-distancing initativies, many decided to remain remote due to the benefits of cost savings, larger talent pool, and arguably - happier employees.

Whether you’ve been working from home for the past few years or are just starting now – in this article we’ll discuss how you can create the perfect home office space to help you remain both happy and productive!

A Dedicated Space for Work

Having a space in your home that’s solely dedicated for work is arguably one of the most important points on this list. Being able to mentally separate your work and personal life will be instrumental to ensuring that your home doesn’t just become an extension of your office.

The size of your home or requirements for your workspace may vary but we usually recommend utilizing a separate room entirely when possible – this will allow you to close off the door and/or exit your working space when you’re no longer in ‘work-mode’.

Upgrade Your Furniture

Once you have a set space for your home office, you can now start thinking about filling it with your own home office furniture. This is where you’re able to get truly creative and make your space your own – rather than that grey cubicle under fluorescent light bulbs that you’re missing in the office.

There are a ton of different ways that you can customize your workspace and your home office setup, but for this section we’ll just talk about the bare necessities that you’ll need to start working comfortably.

Your Desk

One of the easiest ways to customize your home office is to invest in a new home office desk. There are tons of options available in terms of design, colours, sizes, etc., but what you’ll want to ensure is that you invest in a desk that is at least 29 inches from the ground. This will provide you with a comfortable sitting experience and (for most people) give you enough room to move both your legs & feet around underneath.

Additionally, you can also invest in a stand-up desk that will allow you to adjust the height anywhere between a sitting position and standing position.

Office Chairs

Office chairs are another essential part of your home office set up. Since you’ll likely be spending most of your day sitting down at a computer, you’ll want to ensure that you have a chair that’s not only comfortable but ergonomic as well. This will ensure that you maintain proper posture and blood flow while you’re typing away.

Organizers & Storage Units

Depending on how much room you have, the desk you’ve chosen, and your job itself – you may need some additional storage space in your home office. While many desks come with drawers built in – you can also purchase additional storage units such as filing cabinets, drawer units, or desk organizers that will help ensure your workspace remains clean and clear while you work.

Customizing Your Workspace

Once you’ve gathered all your home office furniture such as your desk, chair, and storage units - you'll now have the opportunity to customize your workspace with different home office décor to truly make it your own!

Plants & Greenery

One of the easiest ways to spruce up your workspace is by adding some plants! Depending on the level of light you receive in your office you may want to research some low-light plants that don’t need to sit next to a window. Even if you don’t have a ‘green thumb’ consider purchasing some fake plants to help warm up your workspace!

Personalization

How to personalize your workspace will vary from person to person but we recommend decorating your desk / office with things that you enjoy. From photographs of your loved ones to model cars – decorate your room with whatever makes you happy and motivates you to get through the day!

Lighting

Lighting is also an important aspect of setting up your home office – since you’ll likely be working for most of the day, you’ll want to find a space that is close to a window (if possible) so that you can still enjoy the sun throughout the day. Additionally, if you’ll be working later in the evening or on video calls – we recommend purchasing a ring light or desk lamp to help illuminate both you and your desk to avoid any unnecessary eyestrain that can occur from poor lighting.

How to Make Space When There Is None

When space isn’t an issue, setting up your home office is a relatively easy task. All you truly need are a desk and chair. However, in most cases finding the extra space to set up your work materials can be challenging. Whether you’re living in a small apartment, have kids at home, or just have too much stuff in the way, there are plenty of reasons why creating the perfect workspace is so challenging – until now!
